Teak wood table scars?
We own a beautiful teak table that has some unsightly patches of discolor due to hot items being placed on it by our friends and kids. We want to revitalize it but no matter how much oil we feed it or care we take of it now it retains the lighter and near whitish scars that were given it.
We don’t think sanding off the top will do any good. I mean, teak is the way it is because of the natural oils that are in it throughout, right?
Does anyone know about this hardwood and how it acts? Maybe how to give it it’s luster back? We’d be so appreciative! We love our table very much!
Timmy- An iron and a towel would just draw out all of the oil all around and ruin the table in full. Sure, it’d be uniform, but the hot with the absorbent things is the reason for the not-so-shinny discoloration. Two things damaged it; pizza boxes and hot pads with hot pots on top. I like my orange colored shinny.. ^.^ Don’t want a gray colored one.
YardEnvy.com offers a teak cleaner http://www.yardenvy.com/p/Teak_Cleaner__1_Liter_Misc_Accessories–15674–128.htm that is supposed to restore your teak to its original condition. The teak cleaner they offer is sold from a company with one of the longest teak warranties on the market for their teak patio furniture, so I would bet it’s one of the more effective cleaners. It is supposed to restore your teak to its original condition – stains and all – and is supposedly able to be used at any point – even if a decade after purchase. Teak is supposed to last forever, so if this cleaner doesn’t work, I would question whether your table is real teak.
As for the natural oils – as long as it is teak you should be able to sand all you want – the oils are natural so you can’t destroy them. But then I would recommend following your sanding with Teak Protector http://www.yardenvy.com/p/Teak_Protector_(1_Liter)_Misc_Accessories–15675–128.htm to prevent future headaches.

I would never recommend the iron.
