Are crocheted things safe for budgies?
I love crocheting and I have a pair of budgies that I would love to make things for. There’s currently a platform in their cage that I crocheted that they sleep on a lot. I want to make them some toys, but I don’t know it it’s safe. Are crocheted things safe for budgies? Should I remove the platform and buy one of those little bird huts instead?
The stitches are very tight, by the way, so there is no way they could get their feet caught in it.
I love to crochet also. If you use undyed or naturally dyed cotton – or sisal rope to crochet with, it should be ok. Just watch to make sure that when the budgies chew on what ever you make (which they will do) you remove the item if it gets frayed enough for them to get tangled in the strings. You could also use strips of natural leather. Drs Foster & Smith sell replacement parts for their parrot toys, and you could order some of the leather and ropes from them.
