Easy Ways to Start a Campfire

I love to take my family camping because it’s a great way to get away from the everyday distractions such as the television and telephone. One of the most important things to have on a camping trip is a campfire because the kids love to roast marshmallows and the adults like to sit around the fire and talk about whatever is on their minds. With my experience in building fires and observing others with their campfire building skills, I have developed a good understanding and ability to build a good campfire.

First of all, let me tell you what not to use when building a campfire. Never use lighter fluid to start the fire, because it adds a lot of chemicals to the environment and contaminates whatever you cook over the flame. Never use charcoal because it is difficult to maintain a good flame and decreases the likelihood of getting a good fire started. You want to make sure the wood your using is good and dry. Wet or moist wood is almost impossible to get a flame started on and will cause a flame to burn down even after the fire is started.

Here is how I build my fires, but before I start let me give my wife credit, because she taught me most of what I know about building campfires. The first thing I do is make sure my tent which is a Chinook Tornado 6 person 3 season tent and my Microloft 23F Sleeping Bag from http://www.qualitytentsforyou.com is far enough away from the fire not to get damages by the flames and then I gather a large pile of dry leaves and twinges and place them where I plan on building the fire. I place the leaves about 18 inches high and 24 inches around in a space provided by the campground for building fires. Then I stand pieces of wood on their ends in a circle leaning against the leaves with their tips touching each other. I use pieces of wood that are 2 inches in diameter and alternate with pieces that are 4 inches in diameter until I have the leaves surrounded with wood. I try to allow about half an inch between each piece of wood the allow for air to circulate. I also put one to two pieces of wood that are about 8 to 10 inches in diameter around the pile. I usually stack one on each side to maintain the fire. I stack the wood in a teepee form which helps the flames to breath and the fire picks up really fast and easy. I never use chemicals to start my fire because it feels a little like cheating when you have to use a flammable liquid to start the fire. I do use a lighter to get my flame but the rest is dry wood and leaves.

A good campfire is very important when camping especially when camping with kids but remember when you place lighter fluid on a campfire your contaminating the environment and air around the fire.

Some things to remember before you go camping is to make sure you have a good Chinook tent which is waterproof in case it rains, a good sleeping bag which will keep you warm in case it get cold during the night and some good dry wood and access to some dry leaves, even if you have to bring them from home, to start the fire.
