When the truck gets accelerated, relatively a force acts on the box in the direction opposite to that of the truck.
Usual technique to find the relative quantity w.r.t to some one is, first, we must bring that one to the rest position by applying an equal and opposite vector. The same is to applied to the one whose relative quantity is needed.
For example say car A and car B are moving with speed 50 kmph and 20 kmph in the same direction. To know the relative velocity of A w.r.t the car B, we must bring B to rest by applying 20 kmph vector in opposite direction to B. The same vector is to be applied for car A. Hence 20 kmph will be opposite to 50 kmph and hence the resultant will be 30 kmph in the direction of motion of carA. This means car A seems moving at speed of just 30 kmph as seen by the observer in carB.
If car A and car B move in opposite directions with velocity 40 and 30 kmph, then the relative velocity of A w.r.t B will be 40+30 = 70 kmph.
Same technique. B is brought to rest by applying 30 kmph in opposite. The same 30 kmph is given to A. But already A is in opposite direction. Hence added. We get 70 kmph as relative velocity.
So in the same manner, in our example the truck is brought to rest so as to know the relative motion of the box w.r.t the truck. So box has to move in the opposite direction with the same acceleration and hence it hits finally the tail gate.
