You’re given two irregular shaped objects made of two different metals. one is made of gold and the other mad?
the other is made of silver . if the density of gold is 19.3g/ml and the density of silver is 10.5g/ml devise an experiment to determine the metal in each object. assume that you cannot tell the composition of the object by its color.
This is an easy one.
First, accurately weigh each object and record the weight in grams.
Now, since the objects are irregularly shaped you cannot directly determine their volume. BUT…. if you have a tank of water in which you know the exact volume of water you can place one of the objects in the tank and measure the increase in volume. The new volume of the water minus the original volume is the volume of the object. Repeat this for the other object. You know know the exact volume of each object.
Now divide the weight of one of the objects by its volume. This will give the objects density. Assuming the objects are either pure gold or pure silver, only two possible answers are possible for the densities of the objects; 10.5 or 19.3 If you get 10.5, you have the silver object and if you get 19.3 you have the gold object.
