Salamander Sand Filled
What kind of Newt / Salamander what I can find?
I live in Westchester County in New York and yesterday I was at a freinds house. While I was an old well which is currently filled to the brim with sand and several inches of water. Inhabiting the well was several Salamanders / Newts of the same species. I captured several my biology class and I'm trying to name the species. I'm not sure if their larvae or not. They biggest I've caught and seen that he was about two inches long. They also captured one of several and a half inchs newts / Salamanders and one of them, an inch Newt / Salamander. All are brown. Organelle have portruding visible from the neck. His tail looks like a tadpole. and constitute nearly half its body length. They are brown and very thin. Please help me to identify, or point me to a website that can. Thanks!
These are all the salamanders in the state of New York: http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7485.html page web shows distribution maps for each species. Based on the time of year, you can eliminate many of them because they breed in the spring and the larvae mature in autumn. The chances that you can choose from that list are: larvae or adult mudpuppy salamander larvae of two lines (the pattern does not develop clearly until they are adults, and takes two years to mature larvae) larvae Hellbender (unlikely. Hellbenders are rare) marble salamander larvae (developmental pattern may be delayed as well that breed in the fall, which is rare)
