Childs bike – fixed wheel. is it possible to convert to freewheeling – what are the bits called?
Child’s bmx type single speed bike with 14 inch wire spoke wheels. wheeled it out for his birthday this morning and thought – that’s strange…
It’s actually got a fixed wheel – ie the pedals are locked to turn with the wheel – in both directions.
He hasn’t really noticed yet but when he goes down the banks in my mum and dads garden there will be problems!
is it easy to convert? what do I need, is it a spindle? or the hub, or just the cog thingy. or a whole wheel?
I have worked on bikes at length many moons ago, but before I take the chain guard and wheel off, any guidance from someone who knows?

You would need to replace the fixed sprocket on the rear wheel with a freewheel one.
You’d need to get one with the same number of teeth.
I don’t know if you’d need a special tool to remove the fixed one, it may be easier to just take the wheel out, take it to a cycle shop and ask them to change it, they shouldn’t charge too much for the work.
