1997-1998 Honda Odyssey (USA)
The Odyssey was introduced in 1995 as Honda's first minivan based on the Accord platform, with a 4-cylinder engine, all anti-lock disc brakes, all wishbone suspension and a four-speed automatic transmission with shift lever mounted steering column and a feature of the hill waiting, marketed as Grade Logic. The design featured monocoque construction, dual airbags, dual gloveboxes, dual heating and cooling zone with a capacity of 20 percent higher than a system of Accord (overhead rear fan speed adjustment control, and control switch principal on the front seat passenger), conventional-swing back instead of opening the sliding doors, and third-row seats that can fold and fall into a compartment underfloor spare tire was inside SpaceSaver, right, rear wall of the cabin.
Honda sells the Odyssey of the first generation in two trim levels. The LX hosted seven passengers with two front seats, a bench of three seats removable media, and a bench in the third row of two seats. The EX accommodate six passengers (with two removable second-row captain chairs instead of the bench) and offered additional equipment, including a roof rack, alloy wheels, power height adjustment driver's seat, power sunroof, keyless entry system, fog lights (later model year), color side moldings body and mirrors, map lights, and 20 watts AM / FM / cassette six-speaker audio system.
In a cooperation agreement between Honda and Isuzu, Isuzu offered a rebadged version of the Odyssey of 19961999 as the Isuzu Oasis. In turn, Honda and Acura offers the Trooper and Rodeo rebadged as the Passport and SLX, respectively.
In 1996, Taxi New York City and Limousine Commission (TLC) has extended the number of licensed cars, the approval of the first generation Odyssey for use in fleet of taxis in the city the Odyssey having been recommended by the grandson of seven years a member of the advisory committee TLC. Initial tests identified advantages riders then prevailing on the Chevrolet Caprice and Ford Crown Victoria taxi models that include a greater height (for a better view of the road), headroom, space for hind legs, back footroom (the Odyssey's front wheel drive with a flat floor) and the cargo space in sedans, as well as air conditioning vents in the later, the sedan did not offer.
Reception
In its debut, the Odyssey won the Japan Car of the Year (Special Category) and the car RJC New Year. In September 1997, the Odyssey had sold over 300,000 units, becoming the fastest-selling Honda new cars and Civic breaking the record. The Odyssey was Wheels magazine Car of the Year for 1995. In the European launch of the Odyssey, which was set as the shuttle, former British Grand Prix pilot Jonathan Palmer described his handling equal of any "executive saloon."
In 1995 a survey owner of the survey, 98% of respondents qualified managing the Odyssey as above average, 50.3 percent of engine power rating should be good and 25 percent wanted a more powerful engine. A review back of the Odyssey of the first generation minivan summarizes reception in the market:
The Odyssey was out of place in the minivan market, which favors an amount huge and comfortable interior space and versatility
Development
The Odyssey was designed by Kunimichi Odagaki, then a chief research engineer Honda and Development Center, along with a team of 20 members following the recession in Japan in early 1990 and the possibility of a 25 percent tariff if the minivans were imported to the U.S. as light trucks. In the course of development of the Odyssey, became capital to circumvent these obstacles and devise a viable package internal could use existing production facilities with minimal investment.
Odagaki traveled to the U.S. in September 1990 with a small sub-team to carry out a review of U.S. market minivan. In building projects, the team was considering the change for the proposed four-cylinder V6 alternatives when the project was canceled.
Odagaki continued to work with an "underground" team, using as its creed the design concept of a stream of "personal" which in turn led to the original concept car codenamed PJ. Odagaki conceived the idea of folding the third row of seats in a compartment floor, and worked with his team include a central corridor. " The team determined a minimum height of 1.2 meters inside to hold the hall, and favored a design with a low floor providing ease of entry and exit of passengers, easy parking ability, low ceiling height load and higher productivity in the assembly line.
The team worked to convince management of the project's viability, with ample illustrations, a scale model of a quarter and a foam model at Full Size. In April 1991, Odagaki won permission to develop a prototype.
Download: Original design drawings for the submission of the Honda Odyssey, a generation
After what the prototype right-hand drive to the U.S., Odagaki won the support of American Honda. The production was officially launched on October 20, 1994, the first Honda model to be released simultaneously through three distribution channels for Japanese Honda (Primo, Clio, Verno), marketing through the odyssey of the three channels with the same name.
In its debut, the Odyssey won the Japan Car of the Year (Special Category) and the New RJC Car of the Year Award. In September 1997, the Odyssey had sold over 300,000 units, becoming the fastest-selling Honda new cars and breaking the record Civic.

The second generation Odyssey North American market was first convened in Canada in 1999 mainly model North America and marketed in Japan as the LaGreat between 1999 and 2004. The TV advertising campaign for the new odyssey evokes moments of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, in particular the coupling of the extension of the Space Station and lunar landing sequencess the soundtrack of The Blue Danube Waltz.
In its second-generation Odyssey was considerably larger than its predecessor, and adopted the style format Chrysler minivan with rear sliding doors instead of hinges, and 210 horsepower (160 kW) V6 engine instead of the original, four-cylinder. The Odyssey offers two sliding doors as standard equipment, while other minivans of the time only offered the one hand, a second door is optional. The Odyssey offers power sliding doors that were standard on the EX ornaments, but optional on the LX ornaments. The Odyssey remains the top-in-the floor rear seat, an innovation adopted by many other minivans. The truck continued to receive updates and supply systems VHS and DVD-based entertainment. There was also an available Honda Satellite linked navigation system, introduced in 2000, which became the first navigation system offered in a minivan.
For 2002, side air bags torso model were added and made standard.
The 2004 model was the only second-generation Odyssey to receive the model year reliability scores five out of five according to Automotive Information Systems. [Citation needed]. Consumer Reports gave the Odyssey its highest marks in IIHS Frontal Offset, Front: Government and government side in the years 20002008 (there was no evidence Side: Government for the 1999 model, and there is no data available for the 2009 model). [Clarification requested]
The second generation Odyssey was a commercial success. Was praised for its powerful V6 engine, its treatment, from four-wheel independent suspension, and its features as a large cabin, power sliding doors and seat stowed away in the third row. He won consecutive most popular awards Edmunds.com Editors' of 19992003 in the minivan category.
Mid-generational Update
The Odyssey also received a significant increase of power of 210 hp (157 kW) to 240 hp (179 kW) in 2002. Also added for 2002 was a five-speed automatic transmission, side airbags, rear disc brakes, and a few small cosmetic improvements on the outside and inside. The Odyssey was unchanged for 2003 and 2004, before being replaced with third-generation model.
Transmission issues
Automatic transmission 4-speed models 1999-2001 had serious problems with transmission durability. Honda spokesman Mike Spencer said the four-speed models were affected by bearing bad that could break, scattering metal fragments that clog the channels of transmission fluid, causing a change erratically. Honda responded to problems by extending the guarantee of the U.S. broadcast '99-'01 Models to seven years or 100,000 miles (160,900 kilometers). An agreement lawsuit over expansion of coverage to 109,000 miles (175,400 kilometers) or 93 months for some '99-'01 Odysseys Canada USA is not included. Reliable five-speed automatic is first installed on the Odyssey 2002 model, but overall the transmission will not improve until 2004 according to Consumer Reports. Mike Spencer, a spokesman for Acura, said the five-speed models typically were damaged by premature wear of the third gear clutch pack. As the clutch friction material worn bits are scattered within the transmission case, the obstruction of fluid lines and causing erratic changes. Drivers may experience slipping, poor or no changes, or sudden changes of gear down from fifth to second gear.
Under certain conditions, a one different problem 5-speed transmission emerged, whereby the second gear may overheat and rupture, causing the transmission to lock. A jet lubricating oil was added this gear, but this did not solve the problem third gear clutch. The addition of the cooling of the transmission Honda with the towing package still allows transmission fluid temperatures are too high. But it was required along with a power steering cooler for any trailer or warranty is void. The Acura CL, TL, MDX and the Honda Accord suffered similar problems.

Honda introduced the third generation Odyssey for the 2005 model year. It grew in width and weight, but maintains the length of the previous generation and interior space.
Honda introduced the ACE body engineering for third-generation Odyssey, which was used later in the eighth generation Civic. airbags side curtain and electronic stability control are included in all models of both features previously unavailable.
A lot of other features have been added, such as integrated sunshades on the rear doors, windows that roll in the second row and third row "Magic Seat" was changed from a plan bank directly to a 60/40 split design to allow for easier folding. The headrest can now be left in place when you drop the back seat. Some Notable features of the redesign were dual glove boxes and a floor storage compartment lazy Susan, which is in the spare tire left on the previous generation. The back of the windows changed. It features a shifter mounted on the dashboard, rather than a column-mounted shifter in previous generations. The second-row bucket seats do not fold into the floor. Plus-One "A" jump seat was optional on the EX and expensive ornaments for use with an eighth passenger.
Engine power was increased to 255 (re-rated to 244 by the new SAE guidelines and descriptions used in 2006 + models) and EX-L and Touring Honda received VCM, or Variable Cylinder Management system. This allowed the van to receive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings of economy Fuel 20 mpg-US (12 L/100 km, 24 mpg-imp) / 28 mpg-US (8.4 L/100 km, 34 mpg-imp) for the 2005 model year. (18 mpg-US (13 L/100 km, 22 mpg imp) / 26 mpg-US (9.0 L/100 km, 31 mpg-imp) for the VCM not equipped LX and EX models.) These figures were re-evaluated in 2007, increasing the number of 17/24 for VCM equipped models and 16/23 for non VCM equipped models. Consumer Reports said in the 2005 car that Odyssey was one of the vehicles that gas mileage recorded was much lower than the EPA ratings. The acceleration was slightly slower than the generation of two models.
The EX-L and larger ornaments can be purchased with two navigation systems and rear entertainment, while the i-VHS-based VES was abandoned. There are four trim levels U.S.: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring, package line-up in alignment with the incorporation of Odyssey, as run-flat tires and power liftgate.
The Touring model is equipped with run flat tires Pax are designed to run 125 miles (201 km), without pressure air. Pax vans was not sold on the Canadian market because of the availability of tires and service can not be assured. Pax consists of a single tire, with different diameters inside edge compared with the outside, a support ring that is a hard ring is mounted in the wheel of Pax-only property, a lubricant gel and the wheel itself. When flat, Pax is running on the internal support ring lubricated with a special gel. TPMS also included even before the measurement systems tire pressure was required by the government. Pax run flats wear faster than other tires Odyssey original design with more slots thin at the edges and even stronger due to the low profile that reduces the distance from the outside of the rim with the support ring when flat. Pax tires cost about $ 1200 by a group of four or $ 1600 for 4 snow tires including installation fee and the gel pack. Pax requires special equipment and training to assemble and to align wheel that many stores do not. A gel pack property needed for the assembly or overheating when running flat will occur. Some distributors and stores tire very few are able to mount or repair of Pax. This makes the high prices and limited availability. The replacement or repair, especially on weekends and holidays is limited. The tires just for Odyssey Touring Pax are Michelin Energy LX4 tires or Michelin X-Ice snow. No other options Odyssey Touring Tire 20052007 despite being on the market since late 2004. Pax became an option for 2008 models.
Third generation Odyssey is under transmission problems compared with the second generation, and overall reliability 20052008 half has been better than average according to Consumer Reports. Problem areas include bodily integrity, body hardware, audio system, brakes and suspension according to Consumer Reports, April 2007. The owners have reported tremor operation of the MCV, motor support and / or torque converter problems. Crash test ratings have been five stars in all tests, but the 2005 had a security problem. "During the side impact test, the driver's door is unlocked and opened. A door opened during a side impact crash increases the likelihood of ejection the occupants. "Odyssey has earned a place in cars and trucks 5Best driver over the past three years and a number of other prizes. The Odyssey is the minivan ranked in the U.S. News graphics.

2010 Honda Odyssey EX
For 2008, the Odyssey received a mid facelift model. All models are equipped with active front head restraints, daytime running lights, and a standard MP3 jack. Grill is similar to the 2008 Agreement and taillights have been redesigned.
The backup camera, previously only included with the navigation-equipped models is integrated into the mirror of the no-Navigation EX-L. There is also full Bluetooth support in the Touring model for all Bluetooth equipped devices. Touring Models now come standard with the navigation and the Plus One jumpseat in the EX and EX-L.
In Canada, a new entry-level DX adjustment has been added to complement the LX, EX, EX-L and Touring packages for the years 2008 and 2009 model year. The rear DVD entertainment system can be ordered on the EX-L trim and standard on the Touring. The DX lacks features as the "second-row seat addition to storage, conversation mirror with sunglasses holder, tinted glass, roof rails, moldings and has a black body.
most recent assessment of JD Powers reported an increase in quality issues reported by owners. The most frequent concerns are the vehicle vibration, the vibration direction, and the erratic operation of the transmission.

End 1999, a new and larger "second generation" Odyssey appeared in Japan and Australia, and as a left hand drive (LHD) in China. However, this new odyssey was a major upgrade of the first generation Odyssey rather than a completely new model. As a result, its shape and appearance are similar to the Odyssey first generation. Still, it was 85 mm (3.3 inches) longer and 10 mm (0.4 in.) wider than the previous model, while the length of the sedan shortened. The base model is still sold with a 2.3L 4-cylinder engine F23A (RA6 (2WD) and RA7 (4WD), however, the 3.0 L V6 VTEC J30A (from the first generation now producing 210 hp (154 kW)) was available with RA8 (2WD) and RA9 (4WD). The Honda Odyssey 2000 was the first to receive a 5-speed automatic transmission (with 3.0L engine). All gearboxes second generation also featured another first – a manual tiptronic-like, known as "Honda S-matic, in that a gearbox remains a classic hydro Honda-automaton, but the driver is able to manage change in time (if possible electronically) selector with '+' & 'positions -'. The interior was completely new. The automatic shifter old column was transferred to the center console. Digital climate control replaces the old manual controls, and is situated close to the audio system controls. Imitation wood was standard on all models, while V6-L models in leather was standard. The interior layout was also changed (second and third row), and the spare wheel was moved to a new position below the third row. With versions L and Absolute, an additional heater was added third row. The roof was no longer available.
A sporty "Absolute" version with all the chassis for the first time that has been raised. This co-Mugen-tuned version differs from the suspension changed the behavior of European car-like, 17-inch wheels and some exterior / interior changes.
In January 2003, the Odyssey was given a mild restyle. Received new, more Large Honda emblems for the front and rear tail with clear lenses, lights (in lieu of amber), and a larger front grille with 4 strips chrome instead of 3. U.S. prices fell $ 2,000 (U.S. $ 24,490) for the 4-cylinder, $ 4000-US for the V6 (U.S. $ 30,490). In the Australian market The new Odyssey proved more popular than its predecessor, at least initially. However, in 2002, sales reached a record low, and in 2003, sales of only 649 units were almost one third of the total in 2000.

The third-generation Odyssey was built in Japan was the first complete redesign of the Odyssey, since its introduction in 1995. Going on sale Japan in late 2003 and in Australia and many other countries in 2004, it continued with a body style 5-door, with a much less elegant, and aspect type car. For the first time cruise control appeared in the Odyssey JDM. The 4WD version has received the new DPS system. The seat folding mechanism is changed again. The height of the new Odyssey was lower than ever – designed with multi-level parking into account, particularly for Japan. The new Odyssey came with the Honda K24A i-VTEC, a unit 2.4 L that produces 160 horsepower (118 kW), which was the same engine used in the CR-V and Accord. A 4WD version (RB2) came only with automatic transmission while the 2WD version came only with a continuously variable transmission. The V6 engine was dropped completely. Instead, a 200 hp (147 kW) variant forced K24A engine was adopted for all sports version (190 hp (147 kW) with 4WD), which was equipped only with an automatic transmission – both 2WD and 4WD variants. Moreover, this new engine had the same fuel consumption than the previous engine 2.2. All this resulted in the new Odyssey become a bestseller. In Australia, Odyssey achieved its best sales year in history in 2005 and outsold the Toyota Tarago for the first time.
