A 0.10 kilogram solid rubber ball is attached to the end of an 0.8 meter length of light thread. The ball is swung in a vertical circle. Point P, the lowest point of the circle, is 0.20 meter above the floor. The speed of the ball at the top of the circle is 6.0 meters per second, and the total energy of the ball is kept constant.
a. determine the total energy of the ball, using the floor as the zero point for gravitational potential energy
b.Determine the speed of the ball at point P, the lowest point of the circle
c.Determine the tension at the top and bottom of the circle
The ball only reaches the top of the circle once before the thread breaks when the ball is at the lowest point of the circle
d.Determine the horizontal distance that the ball travels before hitting the floor

a. The total mechanical energy is constant, therefore we may chose to calculate it at any convenient point. Let’s chose to do so at the top of the swing: E = KE + Ug (Kinetic + gravitational potential energy)
KE at the top is 1/2 m v^2 = 0.5*0.1*36 = 1.8 J
Ug at the top is mgh = mg2L = 0.1*9.8*2*0.8 = 1.5678 J
therefore E = 1.8 + 1.5678 = 3.368
b. at point P, we have the same total mechanical energy as in any other point of the swing, therefor at point P:
1/2 m v^2 + mgz = 3.368 J with z = 0.2 m
we get an answer v = 7.96 m/s (CHECK my math!)
c. at bottom : T – mg = m (v^2 / r) ps: this is not in VECTORS—
v^2 / r being the centrifugal acceleration)
replace by your numbers and find an answer.
at the top T + mg = m (v^2 / r) (!!! IN VECTORS !!!)
which gives you T = m (v^2 / r – g) ( ALSO IN VECTORS)
you have to calculate the speed at the top from the Mechanical energy and replace here — PS: here you should get a negative value of the VECTOR T, but the magnitude of T is positive)
