From Goof Balls to Golf Balls
Golf was first played in 1700′s in the fields of Scotland and so was the golf ball. Since then, as the game underwent revolutionary changes so did the ball. Nowadays, the pitted or dimpled hard golf balls are being used in tournaments and games.
In the earliest stages of the game, golf balls were made of woods that were naturally cracked after several strikes. And so, feather-cored ball was developed. This leather bound ball was highly popular then for it were much better than the wood balls. But soon after it’s development, a new form of ball came into scene. The solid gutta-percha rubber ball.
The gutta-percha balls were commonly known as the “gutties”. These were made of gutta-percha, a type of natural latex, which revolutionized the sport. Later, with the discovery of new synthetic rubbers, the golf ball has a adopted a new form, the highly engineered plastic covered white hard balls.
Several years ago, there were only two types of golf balls, and the used golf balls market is yet to give rise to its own popularity. Golf balls were also very affordable then but in the coming of years, science has crept its way in the field of sports and new developments were made, even in the golf balls.
Generally, beginners wound for a solid core ball with Surlyn cover, a type of plastic. These are cheaper and achieve more distance but difficulty of control. More experienced players grab for golf balls with balata cover which offers more spin and a better feel but these features off course, would command higher prices.
In the early 90′s changes in the ball structure were starting to commence. There became the three major types of golf balls: the Distance Golf ball, control golf ball and the spin golf ball. The latter has the best quality and the distance golf ball is the most affordable.
As far as technology is concerned, golf balls were developed in such ways that they were entirely modified to increase everything there is. Meaning, from its roundness to the material used in making a golf ball. Some were even so scientifically modified that one needs some awareness in chemistry to know what forms a ball.
Some manufacturers went far into developing golf balls made of Titanium, others Magnesium or Tungsten. Some are even multi-metal made balls. Some companies expose golf balls to Gamma Rays and other put bald spots on the ball to achieve truer rolls. These changes are off course all in the name of improved plays.
Alongside with the new technological advances applies new technologies. One of which is ball compression.
Golf ball compression is the measurement that defines the degree of deformation a golf ball asserts after a few strokes with a golf club. A common misconception for golfers is that higher compression ball will add distance to tee and fairway shots.
A decrease in accuracy is significant after a round of play. This may be attributed with the deformation that the ball gets after several strokes. However, only accuracy of hits is affected not the distance that the ball achieves.
Golf balls are designed to last. These can be used even after several years of being stocked in a storage area. However, if these balls were exposed to extreme conditions like prolonged exposure to the heat of the sun, the life expectation from the golf ball is shortened.
